Just because a large devastating asteroid is about to hit Earth, doesn't mean that it will actually be detecting first.

If the astroid approaches fast enough from the direction of the sun, and for some reason it's not detected by SOHO, we would never see it coming.

There is no way they can keep it a secret. Armatures have telescopes that can tell you if a flashlight is on 500 miles away. Telescopes this powerful could easily see these asteroids well before they hit us.
