You need to clean the cartridge and reinsert it. If this continues to happen, you may need to have your NES repaired.
The reason the game won't start is that the lockout chip (the chip that prevents unauthorized NES games from playing) isn't recognizing the cartridge. This is usually caused by either a dirty cartridge or a loose connector in the NES. If cleaning the cartridge doesn't work, either get a new NES or find someone to repair yours.

the heads and pins are dirty, the blowing method cleans them off temporarily at least enough to get a connection, the blinking light is telling you I have power but there is no game inserted. blow on both the inside of the system and the cartridge, also try using a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to clean the chip on the cartridge that'll help some as well.

Your game and probably system need to be cleaned! You might be able to find a cleaning kit on line somewhere for it... Otherwise use rubbing alochol and a Q-tip to clean the game (the metal fin that plugs in when you put the game in) and put it in like usual.. and do it a few times...to remove any dirt inside the system... it wouldnt hurt to do all your games....Just make sure you dont soak the games...just dampen the Q-tip and use a new one for each game.... Hope this helps....if not i can give you more ideas!

Get a new system.it is too old to invest any money into and that parts are way out of stock!
Of course, the old blowing into the cartridge works sometimes and so do cartridge and system cleaners. It is doubtful you will be able to find those anymore though.

Well mine does that and when I clean it, it fixes the problem. Usually using an Alcohol based cleaner with the Nintendo brush on the game fixes the problem. (Keep in mind this cleaner was made by nintendo.)

The 72-pin connector probably has to be replaced. You can find them cheap on eBay.
