Been there. Loved it. Still there !
I now split my time between my home in Australia and my 'home' in Japan.
There are some things about Japan that are just so precious... and though it sounds like a cliche the safety is one of those truly precious things. Sure, terrible things happen in Japan too, but that's hardly surprising in a population of 125 million. What I find really wonderful is that generally anyone - male, female, young or old; can wander around almost anywhere at midnight and not have an issue. Or you can go into a crowded bar and drink for eight hours and there won't ever be a fight.
I never realised how valuable that was till I came back to Australia after a year in Japan and when I went out to the pub on a Saturday there was a palpable tension in the air. There were people just looking to start fights. I've never experienced that kind of aggression in Japan in many many years, and I wish the whole world could learn from their example.

Well, the answers to your question were mostly positive and I dont want to be the bearer of bad news. but there are some down sides to Japan.
If you are a non japanese you are not going to enter the society as you would in your home country. It is basically a closed society. You will have few Japanese friends unless you are a good looking young woman, white or fair skinned and outgoing.
If you are black you will have some direct racisim like refused entry into a night club. It also depends on where you live--Tokyo is exciting but crowded and noisy. Do you like bugs? Japan has cockroaches almost the size of mice--and they fly! Not knowing the language is a hassle -- you will be stressed a bit--especially if you live in the farm countryside. However, the people are frienfdly and like to party and Japan is very safe. I had lived there for eleven years.

Yes I have been to Japan about 4 years ago and my life has bever been the same. I absolutely loved it.
I want to go back so bad. I would love to live and work in Japan. It is my dream. I am not sure how to do that being a Canadian citizen and not wanting to be an English teacher like everyone else does. I think I just thought of a question to ask myself!
Thank you!

Yup, last year. I have loved Japan all of my life. I was there for 8 days and stayed close to Shinagawa station. Got to see some of the best places that Japan had to offer. I can't wait to go back.

What I like about Japan, Japanese is its unique culture - the spiritualism of "zen" - is clearly evidenced in many aspects of Japanese life: from the packaging design of foodstuff... to the decor of a Japanese teahouse... to people's thinking.
I was fascinated with things Japan during the Tsukuba Expo: ultra clean backyards & alleys everywhere; courtesy and manners; respect for materials (eg. wood used in furniture, timber in building interior are almost never painted with color - this is truly very beautiful thinking because what else can be more beautiful than nature's creation?!)
It is a joy to be in Japan... to savor and appreciate the refined life.

I have been to Japan.
I LOVE it so much that I haven't left yet. I am living and working in Koriyama, Fukushima-ken. I am an English teacher. I've been here since March 2005 and I also lived in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, for a year.
I love the Japanese culture, the people are nice and the way of life is something special.

ahhh ...Kyoto-ga dai suki des!!
sumimasen - I know my Japanese is horrible - but you know what I mean!
My wife and I had the BEST trip in the Kansai region, mostly Kyoto and Nara. We have a very good Japanese friend who showed us around and we met so many excellent people there.
WE LOVE JAPAN!!!!!
would go back there in a second. People are so kind and generous - we felt very welcome there. So beautiful and clean and polite - easy to get around, amazing history, great food - not nearly as expensive as I imagined it would be.
I tell all my friends here in Canada how great it is there and that they should visit!! Can't wait to get back there - if I were younger and a bit more carefree would proablby try to move there.
