I'd like him to wear a fabulous pair of slacks with a nice dress shirt...maybe a tie. Should he wear a suit, because he would need a new suit and that would be putting a pinch on our wallets.

The slacks, dress shirt and tie should be fine. He may even be able to get away without the tie, depending on what the pants & dress shirt look like. My husband has worn just dress pants, a nice dress shirt, and soemtimes a tie to many weddings where cocktail attire was appropriate, and has looked great - often better dressed than many other guests.

if it's a wedding, then you need a suit. if not a tux, then definitely a suit. better yet, just go rent a tux. slacks and shirt/tie are what you wear to job interviews. this is a bit more elevated than that.

go to the thrift store or just rent a suit
