The people above who said that Rosaline is the girl who dumped Romeo are right. When the play starts, Mercutio & the guys encounter Romeo, who's all depressed--he's just come from Rosaline's, and the suggestion is that he wanted things to go farther with her, and she wasn't willing, so she cut him loose. The only reason Romeo meets Juliet is that Mercutio & pals think Romeo needs cheering up, so they decide to crash the Capulet party that evening. But before that, Romeo is broken hearted, because he really loves (or maybe just lusts for) Rosaline.

Rosaline is an "off-stage" character in R&J, which is to say, she never actually appears in the play. However, she has considerable significance in the development of Romeo's character. Romeo speaks at length about his love for Rosaline early in the play, which enables Shakespeare to create a powerful CONTRAST between those (obviously) self-indulgent and immature emotions, and the true and deep love he feels immediately upon meeting Juliet.

Rosaline is the girl Romeo had the hots for, but he's gotten depressed since Rosaline won't give it up to him. Mercutio and Romeo's other friends encourage him to look at other girls and find someone else since she isn't pleasing him. Then Romeo meets Juliet, falls in lust, gets married, and dies.

Romeo was a teenager who was hot for R. It was more of a lust thing than a love thing. Then he met J and suddenly R was out of the pic.
