I have one router (main) D-link. One of the network connections feeds another router Hawking which distributes to my upstairs computers. The D-link has a default IP of 192.168.0.1 and the Hawking has a default Lan IP of 192.168.8.1. Now the Hawking router is receiving its WAN connection from the distributed IP range on the D-link as a Dhcp client. Since this is the case I can't see anything on the 192.168.0.1 range from the upstairs LAN.

The way you have this setup now, the Hawking is performing as a NAT firewall so it is blocking access to the D-link network except for Internet access. To make this work as you want it to:

Disable DHCP on the Hawking, move the cable going to the D-link from the WAN port to a regular Ethernet port on the Hawking. Reboot the upstairs PCs connected to the Hawking. Now the Hawking is acting as an Ethernet switch and the upstairs PCs should get a .0.x IP address. Now they can talk to all the other PCs and the Internet using the D-link as their router.

If your upstairs PCs do not get an address automatically, it may be because the Hawking does not forward DHCP requests (it should, but you never know), then give the upstairs PCs an unused static address in the .0.x range and they should work OK.

Bit confusing but here goes. Whichever router has the Internet connection must act as the "router" for the network. In the other router, you should turn off the broadband connection functions and only use as a hub. do not connect the cable into the WAN port on the second router but instead, into one of the other ports. This would have to be a crossover cable. then everything should run in the 192.168.0.X range.

I would take out the upstairs router and replace it with a standard network switch. If you can find one with an up-link port, then you don't need a crossover cable. This is probably the simplest solution.

3.don"t forget to put dns records on the hawking router. 1 record from by your isp provider and the second 192.168.0.1 ( this it"s necesary to route the packets from internal lan to wan interface on dlink ), If you don"t know the dns records from your isp try to look in the dlink configuration running config.

Real easy chuck oout the routers and use a single hub for the whole house. You'll have to buy something that can handle the workload but it'll work better in the long run.

You probably have different subnets. try 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0
