The heart isn't really "breaking" but it feels like it is when you are very, very sad. How does that happen?

It is called psychosomatic pain. "Psych" refers to your mind and "somatic" refers to your body. Your mind is sad and it project the pain of sadness into you body and you feel it physically. The mind and body are more connected than most people realize. It is just like getting butterflies in your stomach when you are nervous.

We are heartbroken when we feel that we have been rejected. Considering that, from an evolutionary point of view, we are only here to pass on our genes, if we get rejected by someone who we have singled out as a 'mate', then the real pain we feel (heartache) acts as the impetus to either try harder with that potential mate or look for another one. It becomes pathological when we fail to read the signs. We persist with no chance of success and the pain just gets worse. Self destruction results.

When your heart breaks, hormones are rushing through your body. its a very traumatic time mentally for you. Your emotions get worked up and frenzied, helped by those wonderful hormones. Due to this sudden influx of different chemicals, you can start to feel sick.

......it really is a sucky feeling to have your heart broken. The next day i work up with a headache after going to bed sick to my stomach.

When under stress, your body releases stress hormones. The stress hormones make you feel bad and can actually physically damage your body's tissues. This is how your body tries to train you to not do certain things. This is my very basic understanding of how the process works.
