Yosemite National Park - it's breathtaking!

I'd second Yosemite as a spectacular destination. Leave the Valley floor very early in the morning and you'll leave the crowds behind. Be in condition for the vertical relief.

Maybe even more so, the Grand Canyon. Definitely be in condition to enjoy yourself. A vertical mile down to river. A vertical mile back.

In the east, Mt Washington or Katahdin.

I've only been to 21 countries, so I can't offer much of a world perspective. I enjoyed the Swiss alps although it is really hard to get out of sight of the towns.

There's a book, "Hiking and Eating (dining?) in Tuscany and Umbria". Each route was a great way to spend an afternoon hiking and a evening dining.

In Europe, I think I'd prefer the High Tatras mountains in Slovakia.

The critters on a walking safari in Zimbabwe impressed me. More so because we were on foot. Alas, the country went to h### two years later.
