How much money are we talking about? Find a good advisory or Financial Planner to assist you in determining your RISK tolerance. That's to say how much am I willing to lose or cope with large swings in valuation of my portfolio. Read and study up on the markets...suggest The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham...Battle for Stock Market Profits and other titles by Gerald Loeb. These are classic works on the market and should help you. If you don't want to go to the trouble study up on mutual funds and buy a couple that fit your risk profile. Good Luck!

You need to read "The Intelligent Investor," by Benjamin Graham. No one can answer your question because you are asking the wrong ones. You cannot invest in the "market." You can only invest in companies. You need to learn how to buy specific firms that meet your specific and persona investing goals. Until you can find them, you cannot invest you can only gamble with your money.

This board cannot help you do anything useful until you learn more.

Start with that book, when you finish it ask another question here about what books to read next. I would give you some suggestions but I don't know your skills. For example, you could read "Security Analysis," by Graham or later additions, BUT if you lack the accounting knowledge you need to read other books first. Maybe you should read "Investing for Dummies," which is a pretty good book actually. Read Graham's 1972 edition and then come back here for more.

Reasearch....reasearch...reasearch.... before you even think about purchasing a stock you should know what type of products/services the bussiness offers, the last years revenue, how high and how low the stock has gotten in the last 6 months or further back if possible, and also what future plans the bussiness have. These are just the basics. There is plenty of reading material out there just Reasearch.

Access websites like www.nyse.com, www.nasd.com, and of course http://finance.yahoo.com/ and review their educational offerings, and watch CNBC, and read The Wall Street Journal and Forbes.
