Because they could!!! lol Great question - I always wondered the same thing. I reckon they really just couldn't leave behind their luggage with their multiple changes of clothing, etc - that would be a true hardship!!!!! It made for great fun -

The series started off in Hawaii, where everyone got on skippers boat to take there tour around the island. The Howells & Ginger are rich so they have lots $$$$$, The Howells own basicly the whole U.S. it seemed, so they would pack 45,000 pairs of clothes, just to go for a weekend, or in there case a vacation. Ginger was a big time movie star so she was raking in alot of dough so she was able to afford 58,000 pairs of clothes. In the end they both where rich so they would have those many outfits on the island. too bad it only lasted for 3 years 1964-1967 i would gone for 1964-1971

Mr. Howell had not planned to take the 3 hour shuttle with Mrs. Howell. He had a business meeting the next day in Honolulu and was going to join her later in the week for a long overdue vacation. Although he was not taking the tour shuttle with Mrs. Howell, he did accompany her in their limo to the marina to see her off. He had the chauffeur take all of their luggage, including a large steamer trunk to the dock for Gilligan to load onto the Minnow.
The rest of the story:
The Skipper was preparing the ship for sailing. Gilligan was having troubles stowing the luggage. When Mr. Howell got back in the limo to leave the marina, he discovered that Mrs. Howell had left her fur stole. Thinking she might needed it, he decided to take the fur to Mrs. Howell before boat sailed.
All of the passengers were onboard but Mr. Howell didn't see his wife. It didn't look like the Minnow was ready to leave yet so he decided to go on board and take the fur to Mrs. Howell. He went down below where he found Mrs. Howell, but when he was leaving the cabin found that the door was stuck. They tried to get out but failed.
By now the Skipper was frantic because the the Minnow was over 20 minutes late sailing due to Gilligan's troubles with the luggage. In their rush to get under way, they failed to realize the Mr. and Mrs. Howell were stuck in the lower cabin,They were well into the 3-hour voyage by the time they discovered Mr. Howell was on board. The Skipper offered to take him back, but Mr. Howell didn't want to spoil everyone's trip so he agreed to proceed on to the resort where he would catch the next return shuttle.
Well as luck would have it the Minnow's radio failed and then "the weather started getting rough..." and you know the rest of the story.

the real question is, why didn't any of them check the weather. I mean come on a professor that is stupid enough to not check the weather. And why didn't the howells just go on a 7 day cruise?

Because they were so possesion-oriented that they could not bear to leave on a trip without taking a major number of possessions with them. Either that or they had no sense of time and assumed their trip was going to require many changes-of-clothes to always be appropriately dressed for each activity. I know real-life people who suffer from the same problems.

I don't know! Why did Ginger go on the cruise wearing a long gown? Why couldn't the brilliant professor figure a way off the island after 7 years?

Unexplainable, but why did they take a little boat ride instead of cruising on a yacht?
