Ok if you want just one fish, get a betta fish. Here's why

1.They like to be alone
2. They don't require a lot of space but please for the love of the betta don't put them in some itty bitty little bowl that they can hardly move in. Get them in at least a gallon bowl so that they can move around.
3. They don't each much. Maybe 10 pellets a day. 5 in the morning 5 at night.
4. They aren't costly. Plus you can go to wal-mart to get them.
5. They don't need filters or bubble walls or anything like that.
6. They don't need a lot of care either, just feed them twice a day and they are happy.

Now if you want a betta a male has a longer tail and usually has more colors but here are some tips on getting a betta.

Look for "bubbles" around whatever container they are in. Those really aren't bubbles and since they are male bettas I'll let you figure out what those are. But when those are present that means that the betta is healthy and happy, so therefore he's a good pick out of the bunch. So when you are looking for bettas, look for ones with the "bubbles" and separate them from the nonbubbled ones. Now you go on from there with the bubble candiates.

With the bubble ones, you then tap on the container, if the fish reacts, that's good make another pile. It is best if they flare out but some won't so don't worry. As long as they move when you tap the container you're good to go.

Now out of that pile that has bubbles and moves when you tape, inspect the fish. If it looks like the fish has white spots on it, don't get it. It has a disease called ick and it can be costly to treat that. If the fish's eyes look like they are bugging out, don't get it, it is sick as well.

If the fish has a really nice, color, eyes look fine, and the fins look good (some fish though will have jagged fins, like a crown betta, their fins are not nice and smooth) then go for it and get a color you like if possible.

Do what I said above and you'll be good to go. You'll know when a betta needs a water change when the water starts to get a bit cloudy. And when you go on vacation a betta is a rather easy fish for someone else to take care of and you can even transport your betta over to whomever's house to let them watch it.

Plus if a betta misses a feeding it won't freak out and die. They can go a weekend without food.

So good luck picking!!

I'd suggest a Betta, aka Siamese Fighting Fish. They are really pretty and low maintenance. They prefer bowls over aquariums with pumps and such as long as you change the water every week. They eat worms instead of flakes, but they come live, frozen, or freeze dried so it's not oo much trouble. You can also stick plants in the water to root, like a pothos, and the thing will be just giddy with happiness.

I had a 4 Inch Black Shark... You can only have one in an average size tank because they are territorial. I also had a cave for him to hide in, so that made him happy. I also turned the lights off at the end of the night and covered his tank with a blanket to keep out the dark. What can I say I babied my fish. Don't judge me other people are just as crazy about their cats and dogs!

Get a betta fish. They prefer to be alone in a bowl, not an aquarium, and they are easy keepers. You only need to really clean the bowl about once a week or so, and they eat freeze dried worms or pellets. Ask you local pet store for more help. :)

I would suggest you stick with freshwater tropical fish. Saltwater tanks are more complicated to setup and maintain, and more expensive. If you go to your local petsmart, you should be able to look at a few options. Keep in mind that many fish prefer to live in schools or shoals. The employees there should be able to direct you to an appropriate selection. Happy shopping! :)

I agree with a betta, they come in so many different types and colors and they will flourish in any size tank (not a bowl), they even sell little 2.5 or 5 gallon tanks just for bettas. If you want you can even try some live low light plants or just use silk and and make it very natural looking, they love to swim and hide in the plants. If you don't want to clean it out very often then get yourself a little filter for it, just don't get one too strong cause most bettas don't like strong currents.

Go to a reputable pet/fish store and ask the sales people. There are a lot of beautiful fish, but ask questions first.

Beta Fish are beautiful, and should never be in the same bowl as another fish... however if you get one keep them in a covered bowel, vase, or tank as they are very good at swimming fast and jumping outta the water.
