It's all about the new global market... which I think really sux.

Here is the major problem with a global economy: wages, no matter what country you are in, will become increasinly competitive. Now that might sound acceptable to a rightwing corporate man BUT when you think about it in depth, you see that it is only going to impoverse the poor even more.

Why? Because with free trade on top of a global economy and this wage war, we will not see a wage increase comparable to the increase in the cost of living, food, etc... And there is no set standard for the variance from country to country. That means like wages in the USA are having to compete with wages in Mexico head to head. So with free trade and no incentives for our companies to stay in the states, how on earth can our wages compete with that? See?

It's a really messed up situation... completely lose lose for the American worker when you consider how expensive it is to live in the USA.

Higher minimum wages are bad for the economy. Companies would rather downsize than pay more than the job is worth. Most companies already pay higher than the minimum now anyway, unless you are talking about fast food or some retail stores. Companies forced to pay higher wages will not expand, thus the economy looses many jobs it could have. The best thing to do is use the system to get an education. A four year college degree today is the equivalent of a high school degree in 1970. Sure the school loans are a beast, but it is better than living pay check to pay check.

The cost of living in the UK is higher than in the US, so their minimum wage is higher. If you think our current minimum wage is low, imagine what it was when your parents began working! It has gone up significantly, but it is still low, you're right.

Because over here in the UK, we had a Labour prime minister (Tony Blair) who was the leader of a Socialist party. The Minimum Wage was meant to be only the start but Blair turned into a centre-left liberal...pah...well, basically, their you go. Britain has a strong Social-Democratic party, you guys onyl go as far as Liberalism.

Because if they raise the minimum wage then the few companies left in the United States will join the majority of other companies and take their businesses to Thailand or China!
