Anyone else think this? I loved going to cinema and watching a good movie and there was always something I wanted to watch. Now I don't go to the cinema at all and I just think all the new Hollywood films are a bit rubbish the last few years.

I can't remember the last decent Hollywood film I saw, there all either poor remakes or they are just not original. Look at Hulk, Kong, i-robot, Sin City, Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, Hitchhikers, Star Wars, Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, The Island, all the New Star Wars..... I think they all been pretty poor. The only half decent one I can think of is Lost in Translation that I actually quite like. But where are all the big good ones like Gladiator, Titantic (it was good at the time just got played to death!), Lord of the Rings (got a bit boring after first one in my oppinion) , Pulp Fiction, Shureshank Redemtion???. Pirates of the Carribean is ok I suppose, but it just doesn't grip me much.

Am sure they used to be better, or am I geting old?

Oh I almost forgot .... Brokeback mountain ..... Once you got over the amazment that they had made a film about 2 gay people (WOW !!! Hollywoods ventured out to realise gay people exist and you can make a film about them that makes money, even though the rest of society aren't that amazed of this groundbreaking stuff anymore) The story was awful and so predictable it was terrible....

you are not getting old, the problem is no original thoughts or ideas are being created. We are in the age of go back to the past and try to recreate it. Sometimes it works and for the most part it doesn't. I hardly go to the movies anymore, because one has to be worth that kind of money to me and most aren't. I rent a lot of movies because if it sucks then I can turn it off and walk away. I love going to see a good film though.. maybe we can have a turn around soon, if not all movies are going to be rent only.. we won't have a need for theatres

I wouldn't go as far as saying there is absolutely nothing coming out of Hollywood that is worth seeing. There are some good recent films, e,g. United 93, School of Rock (a couple of years old i know), Saw, The Proposition.
However, i agree that big 'blockbusters' have been the source of most disappointment. I think corporate greed has a hand in it. It is all about the opening weekend in the Hollywood now and its getting to the point where execs and producers don't really care about the film's basis but about how much money will be made in so many weeks and days. Consequently, they take the safe route e.g. remakes, sequels etc etc instead of banking on new and original material which they may risk losing money from.

Maybe this lull is a good thing and when it passes the film industry will be revived again alá 70s style.

Well to be honest as a screenwriter i have to say that MOST of the movies coming out of hollywood these days are a bit of a formula and that does make alot of money for them. The industry is suffering from some originallity at the moment thats a fact, just look at the amount of unneeded sequels its a joke, remakes are ok if they handled properly given a fresh and new spin on the story,a straight remake is pointless DRACULA springs to mind,a pointless remake of the much scarier NOSFERATU the silent black and white one.A remake i would do is NORTH BY NORTHWEST the hitchcock thriller and you have a ton of ways in which direction you could take that with an unknown in the lead as well.I have a couple of great ideas of changing the way movies are shown and they are corkers but im not telling not yet. Hollywood almost stumbled onto one of them a couple of years ago.I'm also a huge fan of the stuff on the t.v. as well and at the minute i think that it's got the edge on its big screen counterpart God they're doing a 24 movie - pointless, why? it wont be real time.As for the age thing well when you get older you get more intelligent of course so you dont get fooled as much by the movies and you look for something more than good special effects and they are only there to help drive the story thats all THE MATRIX being the best example ever, the first one amazing, the effects enhanced an amazing and original story the second and third movies O.T.T. need i say more. All in all the big H needs is my help to give it a makeover and i cant wait to take it over if i'm given the chance

To be honest the whole melarky about Hollywood being in crisis is a bit rubbish. the industry is just going through a dry phase and damn right to!

How can films like Jurassic Park and Aliens and other classics made in the past 20 years be topped.

Also I think I,Robot, The war of the worlds and Sin city were all great films and really don't see how they are anything but top quality. I thought kong was mind blowing, but some people seem to be getting tired of remakes, shame as Posidein's coming out soon, yay!

but i agree some stink like troy and the island was supposed to be poo.

Washington is really a big and all know city and is certainly suitable send a holiday or perhaps visit this city. with hotelbye you will discover more. One of the designs of Washington and the whole America may be the famous White House, the official residence of the President of the United States. The house of each leader except George Washington, it absolutely was actually created by James Hoban in 1792, and following being burnt down by British allows in 1814 was rebuilt in 1818. Although travels of the inside offering the East, Blue, Green, and Red Rooms; the Ballroom; and the State Dining Room must be reserved well beforehand, every tourist to Washington may wish to see this well-known developing, at the least from the outside. Next door to the White House are the detailed 1833 Greek Revival Treasury Building and the 1871 Executive Office Building, one of the very striking previous government buildings in Washington.

I am a throw back myself. If Jimmy Stewart is in it, I'll watch it. The problem is that not only is everything a remake, the people in the movies are only doing it for the love of the money, not the love of the craft. Also, no one cares about the story anymore, they care about the graphics. If Mr. Smith goes to Washington were made now, no one would see it. If Psycho came out today, no one would be afraid. There is no use of the mind anymore and everyone wants everything given to them on a stick.

I liked Sin City, it's one of my favourites, but I get what you're saying. Most of the films coming out of Hollywood these days are all similar to each other; the horror films, they are so predictable my Mum recited what she though was going to happen in House Of Wax, and it all happened. The action films are hardly nameable because they closely resemble each other, like Miami Vice, xXx, over-using Mission Impossible (if it's so impossible, why are there 3 movies?

And don't get me started on girly mocies like Just my luck, failure to lauch, and the family stone. Why can't girly romance films have some proper depth, and real-life grit?

I'd suggest watching britflicks, as they can be original, and enjoyable. Also, look on the bright side, there have been some great movies in the past few years.

Look at the stars, They couldn't hold a candle to the stars of yesteryear, It's all about how much they can make and how fast to get it to the people, Pirates for example with Johnny Depp, I could not believe they made a second part to that awful movie, The first one was terrible and I wouldn't go across the street to see the part two if it was free

Well some of those movies you talked about are perrty good to me. The problem is that Holloywood is about making money. Tey spend a lot of money and want to make a lot of money. I know some folks who work out there and they have told me how they see plenty of great scripts being thrown to the side because no on wants to take chances on new ideas anymore. They want they same stuff that brings in money.
A lot of the big wigs are out of touch with what people want and cater to only a specific demographic.
SO when you have a formula that works, you use it till it doesnt . That is Holloywood for you in a bottle

Money. So much money is invested that studios try to make their films as commercially safe as possible. Filmakers don't get to take as many chances, because chances are risky. A great film takes chances as does a classicly bad film. A safe film that's done right is only moderately satisfying and one done wrong is usually just a waste of time.
