There is poverty in the U.S., but it is not on the same scale as poverty in Africa. The living conditions for the average person there are much worse than they are here. The opportunities a person has to pull themselves out of poverty here do not even exist over there. Americans don't realize how well they have it in comparison to these "developing" countries in other parts of the world.

Well there is really no perfect answer to this one, but I has more to do with Governments than individuals. Here our government has programs to help the poor. We have food stamps, WIC, job training and placement, homeless shelters and much more. In Africa they have none of these in place because it isn't just the people that are poor, their governments are just as bad off. Obviously there are countries in Africa that have tremendous turmoil and war, but others are not in that worse situation as far as war is concerned. Some countries in Africa are doing better than others, but Egypt and South Africa have stronger central governments to provide infrastructure so business can thrive more. Bono and others are more working with big corperations and big western governments to help African infrastructure, but individuals can help out through his, and other organizations that provide relief. Sure here the guy who works at McDonalds in the day and Walmart at night might be able to get food stamps to feed his kids, but over there they have nothing.

While I do sponsor a child in Indonesia, I also look for ways to help with solving poverty issues right here in my own area. This is something that all of us should be doing! There are soup kitchens and food pantries everywhere that greatly appreciate donations. There are also lots of other ways to help out, such as getting people together to help out when there is an illness in a family, where money may become very scarce, and food as well for recovery time. We do this a lot in our church. We help anyone we hear of too, not just people in our own church(which is, as I feel, the way it should be!!!!). Of course, you certainly don't have to belong to a church to do this, many times it's your own neighbor laid up who needs that boost of love and nutrition!
Solving poverty doesn't have to be so large and monumental in your own communities. And the love people feel when they know you are there for them is also food for the soul!

Well, seeing as it is our economic policies and consumption which is drivign Africa to the ground, i think we have a debt to pay there. True, we have poverty, but no one goes without food or water (at least, not here in the UK). We have free health care, workable social system and decent infrastructure. We should help others who dotn have this, its could Humanitarianism
