I just finished the entire series (including the two books that were written to lead into the left behind series.) I thought that they were excellent! Okay, so they were written simplistically but that's so everyone could enjoy them. People who thought they were simple can just read them faster. I got through all 14 books in less than a week and a half. I know that some parts of the books were not exactly bible based because they had to guess about what would happen because nobody knows what will happen during that time except for the Real Author of the Revelation period.
Just make sure that you follow the appropriate steps to ensure that you are not "left behind" when the Rapture happens. You might think that we (as born again Christians) are wrong, but you'll be proven wrong when you die... and that's just too late. Death is just a separation. Your spirit doesn't die. It either goes to be with Jesus in Heaven or you spend eternity in Hell with the others who thought that good works would get them into Heaven.

I think I've read the first two--possibly three--books. I was hesitant to read them for many reasons. One, I completely think it is ridiculous to try to use them "to scare" someone into the Christian faith. And I have seen people try to do that with their friends. That's a big turn off for me. Two, I think they are theologically unsound. They're version of end time events is 100% speculation...and to see people convinced that this is a screen play for the future is ridiculous. Not that I think it's wrong to speculate in a fiction book...as long as people reading it understand that it is fiction.
But in college, I was on campus a lot in between classes so I would spend two or three hours a day in the library. I would sit and read them there without checking them out. I found them entertaining at that time. But the library lost the third or fourth book (although it had the next books) so I never finished the series.
This is not the first series of books or movies about the end times...there was a dreadfully bad series made in the 70s (and/or book) that were awful. I remember watching these awful movies in high school (it was a Christian school) and just wanting to cringe. So I must say these are better than those.

I did read three of the series already. I was weary of starting something like that, because I tend to shy away from religious books, mainly because most of them are so preachy and trying to convert you over to ultra-religious mode. But when I read the first Left Behind, I was blown away. It was a really great book, not preachy at all, full of political intrigue, mystery, and good full out fun and God was a centerfold but not a reverend. The other two, Tribulation Force and Nicolae were good, but, they became what I feared to find in the book; they started getting preachier. Not too bad but yeah, I have noted the preachiness in there. Still, its' a pretty good religious series but if you don't like getting a tossed course in the lesson of Christianity and the end of days apocalypse, I suggest not to read them.

I just read half the first one, but the theology really turned me off. The writing was engaging, but simplistic, and the characters all seemed religiously one-sided. You're either evangelical, and missing, or you're atheist and left behind. For the 90% of Christians out there who don't identify with the extreme 10% of the spectrum, the book came across a really preachy.

I have read all but the last ones.
The concept was interesting, but the writing was horrible. Each book started off with at least an entire chapter recapping what had happened... they were written for the masses obviously because the writing was simplistic and not at all challenging. I found the main characters to be self-rightous and annoying at times.
I can see why they are so popular.. but I really didn't like them.

I read all of the original series--when I first started, I agree that the writing was atrociously bad, but once I got into the story, either I didn't notice anymore, or it got better--the authors really had a great story to tell. These were a lot of fun!

I think they show a very dark side to the Christian religion. The writers are Baptist, and I personally do not follow the Baptist denomintaion. I think that they have interpreted the tribulation wrongly.

I read the first one, but I didn't really care for it, theologically or as a well written novel. That's not to say you wouldn't like them. Many people seem to.

The "Left Behind" series is well written fiction. It has very little basis in the teachings of scripture.
