I'm having an MRI done this afternoon. How long does it take for the doctor to receive the results?

It depends on the facility you're having the test done. I'm an MRI tech and the company I work for has about a 4-5 hour turn around time for doctors to receive results. I have worked at other facilities, however, where it takes the doctor 4-5 days to receive the results. Unless you're RX has STAT written on it, which means the doctor will receive the results immediately. Just ask the tech how long it takes and he/she will tell you. Hope that helps you and good luck.

Depending on what the doctor ordered in the MRI, it could be as long as an hour in the machine. But the "picture" result is almost immediate. The doctor then looks at the images before they talk to you. Also an electronic set is sent to a 3rd party doctor and they take a look at it too. This prevent a miss reading.

Typically, a day or two after your MRI, you should be able to get your result and talk to your doctor.

Good luck.

The radiologist reads the MRI and dictates it over the phone to have it typed up and sent to the physician. If the doctor wants a STAT (now) result on the MRI, he can have a confrence via the telephone or in person with the radiologist. Sometimes, when there is something in question on the MRI, your doctor may want to look at the films himself to decide how to procede.
Just in case you don't understand, the radiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in reading XR's, CT scans and other imaging studies. Doctors work with them and rely on their opinions, but occasionally disagree with the findings. A lot depends up on how fast the radiologist reads your report and how fast the transcriptionist dictates the report and how soon your physician can get to it.
Hope that helps.

I didn't get the results for about two weeks. But the Dr assured me that if there was anything life threatening he would call right away. Turned out I had old white matter lesions on my brain, a chronic condition not an acute one. The MRI was painless, except for the IV needle, and took about 30 minutes

They have them available as soon as their lab has them done. This could be anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on variables.
