Money is being spent in large quantities in every country but our own. How do we combat poverty in our preciuos nation when we spend a large percentage of US Dollars on foreign countries?

As stated earlier: between US gov't, state gov'ts, and charities, we spend more than 6 times the amount to get every US citizen poor man, woman, and child above the poverty line. But we still have poor people. Getting some of the corruption out of the bureaucracy and government would help reduce the number of poor. We've been fighting the War on Poverty for 40 years and the rates have actually gone up slightly as people have realized that the government will take better care of them than they can with an honest but low paying job.

I just don't think you can eliminate poverty. It is valiant to try but a few people will always be unable to manage their lives and money, some desire poverty so they can complain about the system, some cannot or refuse to hold a job, and some just suffer from plain bad luck all their lives.

Large amounts of money are being spent on the poor and elderly. You are sorely incorrect on the amount that we spend on foreign countries. Our national budget is $2.466 trillion dollars, while our foreign aid expenditures are only $27.457 billion. If you do the math that is a little more than 1%. Conversely, we spend almost a trillion dollars a year on Medicare and Medicaid, programs to help poor people and elderly people get healthcare. So where is this large percentage that you are talking about? It doesn't exist. Giving more money to the poor just doesn't work. We have given trillions of dollars to social programs during the war on poverty and it hasn't helped. The only thing to do is respect ourselves and then we can reach our goals individually.

It's time for big business to stop thinking about their profits (ie tobacco and oil companies) and give money back to the communities. Also stop hiring illegal aliens for work that legal citizens will do. Unfortuantly the ones that suffer are the children living in poverty. They are many children living in poverty, instead of giving money to other countries, it would be wise to look at your own.
