You will only be able to burn a CD in the DVD burner when using a drive to drive operation. You can only play Cd's in the CD-ROM. If your going to get a DVD-RW, you may as well replace the CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM or a second DVD-RW or a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive. Hook them up in a "Master-Slave" configuration.

depends what you want to do.

If you're just copying data, simply select the CD-Rom drive as the source in the program you're using.Bring the files up and then drag them into the program for burning.

If you're copying a retail music CD (which makes no sense), you'll first need to rip the audio off them and burn to the DVD. Be aware that 99.9999% of audio cd players cannot play DVDs. Only a few largely by Sony can do this.

On the rare chance that your dvd-burner doesn't automatically install, you'll need the CD-rom drive to run the software it comes with.

Possibly, but I think the quality from CD-Rom to DVD, would go down.
