When I was at college, there was a blind guy in my class I got friendly with. We used to talk about stuff and I asked him this. He said he did have dreams but it was not possible for any seeing person to understand what they were like. Because he has been blind since birth, he has no knowledge of what things look like. He said he dreams in sound and touch. I think it is interesting though. It would be fascinating to know how a blind person experiences the world.
Also, in reply to some of the comments before mine about blind people maybe seeing colours when they dream, how would they do that? They don't know what colours are. Different colours don't sound, feel or taste any different. Everything is the same to them. My friend once told me that colours are just words to him. He doesn't know what they mean.

Yes, blind people do have dreams. However, those blind since birth or very early childhood have no visual imagery in their dreams. Instead, they experience a very high percentage of taste, smell, and touch sensations in their dreams.
The breakdown is as follows:
There are no visual images in the dreams of those born without any ability to experience visual imagery in waking life.
Individuals who become blind before the age of five seldom experience visual imagery in their dreams.
Those who become sightless between the ages of five and seven may or may not retain some visual imagery.
Most people who lost their vision after age seven continue to experience at least some visual imagery, although its frequency and clarity often fade with time.

yes, blind people dream. the only difference is that they wouldn't dream visually. just as people who are deaf wouldn't dream with sound. dreams are a way for the brain to process/review/relax events of the day. what the brain gets as input or can get as input becomes part of the dream. if the blind person was born blind and have no visuals at all, they won't see in their dreams.

I would think so, the part of the brain for vision processing would still work whether their eyes did or not, and blind people would obviously have some idea of what things looked like regardless of whether they had actually seen them. To suggest otherwise is to deny that they have an imagination. Their images might be inaccurate and perhaps with strange colours, but they would imagine pictures nonetheless. And even if I were wrong about them imagining images, their brains would still be working during REM sleep.

Yes i bet they do and i think their minds would offer some great explanations and vivid look at the world in which we live
imagine never actually seeing a human being but imagining one, or what a tree looks like from a description.
it would look like something out of the yellow submarine ill wager, depending on colours
i would imagine that sounds would play a large part in the dreams and the colours and tricks the mind would play may form shapes from these colours.

I work at the deaf and blind school. The blind kids tell me about dreams they have all the time, but it's difficult to get a description of what they saw in the dream.Like they'll say, "I saw Laurie fall in a hole in my dream."but they can't describe what Laurie looks like or how they knew it was a hole she fell in.It's a mystery to me.

dreams are created by what your eyes take in - things you see everyday, then quite simply mashed together. At night you can have up to 8 dreams each night, but you'll wake up not knowing about them quite simply because you dont remember them. Your minds real powerful!
