I once broke the string on my yo-yo. Do you have any theories on why that happened?

The string theory is one which many people believe...and many people disbelieve. It is a theory in which all elements are made from tiny (even smaller than anything microscopic) circular strings of energy.
Can you walk through a wall, for example? Well, according to the string theory if you run into a wall repeatedly for an infinite amount of time (without erosion/corrosion of the wall or yourself) then you will eventually go through it. This is based on the fact that all strings are equal, except for slight changes based on energy which make up different atoms and molecules. Thus a table has strings with a different enery than your hand, but when you hit the table repeatedly with your hand, the strings in your hand become agitated and they will become such like the ones in the table, or vice versa. (keep in mind this is only theory).
The string theory isn't completely understood; even by the most brilliant of scientists, but it is an interesting topic. Way too much cannot be said about the string theory because of the fact that it is over the heads of most people, but with continuing research and experimentation, we will hopefully be able to understand it a bit more.

String theory is the theory that conflicts with atomic theory. It basically says that atoms not the smallest indivisible substance that exist. Smaller vibrating strings make up atoms, and the speed at which the strings vibrate is what determines the atom type. It is supposedly the link science is looking for between the science of big things (Einstein theory of relativity, and Newton's laws of gravity somewhat) and small things (quantum mechanics). If proved true, it would be a huge mystery solved. Right now, its all theoretical though.

Anyone who believes the universe is made of string must be mad.

I mean, it would be all knotted by now.
