the exchange rate varries every day, at one point this year it has been as high as 121 yen to 1 american dollar. and it has been as low as 107 yen to 1 american dollar.
the best way me and my husband have figured out to convert yen as we shop is just figure 100 yen to 1 american dollar...
lets say you see something you want and it costs 2050 yen well put your finger over the last two numbers and read it again as 20 dollars and 50 cents.
oh! and remember to bring a bag or coin purse to put change into. because their smallest bill is 1000 yen (10 dollars) the 500 yen (5 dollars), 100 yen (1 dollar) 50 yen (50 cents) 10 yen (10 cents) 5 yen (5 cents) and 1 yen (1 cent) are all in coin form. and just think what you would get back if you break a 5000 yen (50 dollars)....

Some places offer yen traveler's checks as well. My mom bought some before she came to visit me in Japan in 2004.

You can buy yen at Narita if you're coming to Japan. The rates at the airport are not bad compared with hotel rates.
Of course, you asked the question going from Yen to Dollars, so I would just recommend you stop by your local major bank and ask if they provide the service and how much it will cost you.

Just divide the yen by 100 to get dollars. It's close enough.
