I'm a bit confused with the part of the question about the tax dollars...please enlighten me on that...
Other than that, I like to read any of today's english versions, as long as it a translation rather than a paraphrased version. The paraphrased versions end up being more fluff than substance for my taste. I don't want someone else telling me what they think it means, I'd rather read the translation and come to my own understanding.
The KJV is still a good Bible and there are those that swear by it, and even use the "language" when they pray, but Jesus didn't say thou and thee, he said you and yours, at least the equivalent of that in the native tongue of that day. I don't speak in thou and thee, nor do I read in that. I prefer to read in the language and form that I speak.

I'm not exactly sure what your total question is. But if you are asking which version of the Bible is preferable, then I would have to say New American Standard for accuracy and New International Version for readability. Both are very good Bibles, the study versions come with commentaries and notes to help the reader better understand the texts with cross referencing.

You are an arrogant and assuming _______ . Because you knew that Christians would open this question, you used it to insult us. What makes you think that YOUR tax dollars are being used to purchase my bible anyhow? Also, I do not presume to impose my religion on anybody because I believe that freedom is one of Gods biggest blessings. FYI, this was reported as abuse.

The King James Version. The divinci Code is fiction novel (check your local bookstore/library) and The passion of the Christ was based on the catholic interpretation of yes you guessed it the King James Version.
*Note* there is nothing wrong with the NIV, but i was raised with the KJV. NIV is a good cross referance tool.
