Are you using internet explorer or firefox?

Generally in windows, you can close any active window using Alt+F4. In Firefox, this works as well. Or, you can close a tab using Ctrl+F4 or Ctrl+W. You can also close a browser window in Firefox window using Ctrl+Shift+W.

Incidentally, if you are using internet explorer, I strongly urge you to switch to firefox. A fraction of the pop-ups, loads pages faster, better features, and far fewer security risks.

other fun shortcuts to avoid using the keyboard in Firefox:

Ctrl+F5: Reloads page, but overrides cache. Good for the last few seconds of ebay auctions!

F7: "caret browsing" -- puts a cursor on the screen movable with arrow keys so you can browse an entire page w/o using the mouse

Back: Alt+ Left Arrow
Forward: Alt + Right arrow

Some of my fave windows shortcuts:

Ctrl + F4: close an active document in a prog where you have several docs open (example: if you have several docs in word open, this will close the top one but not close word)

Logo key + BREAK: opens system properties
Logo key + E: open My Computer
Logo key + M: minimize all windows
Logo key + Shift + M: restore all windows

Ctrl + drag item: copy item rather than move it to new folder

Have fun!

When alt - f fails you can ctrl - alt - del and then close that process - use tab key to move around screen and arrow keys to move around a window.
