Well actually the reason is because the Tobacco Industry contributes big bucks to politicians.
They pay lobbiest to go to Washington to sway the political vote in favor of the industry and away from limitations or the outright banning of cigarette smoking and production.
The law suits that were filed by the various states for compensation regarding the rising cost of the health issues states have had to pay for was in my opinion a political move. Make them pay out a few billion to the states and they can go ahead and make the killing product. I don;t understand how ANY goverment allows the sale of a product that they know is harmful not only to the person who uses it but to all those around them.
Yet they will yank off the market a drug that has harmed 100 people out of 1 million of them.
People will say ooooooh I won;t take such and such drug because some people had a heart attack or even died while taking it, but I will smoke myself to death each and every time I light up a cigarette. I will damage the lungs of my children who are around me when I do so. Go figure!

I dont know about the whole selling the food stamps thing because in kansas where i live, "food stamps" are not actual stamps anymore. They are basically put onto a debit card that is reloaded on your designated day each month. So it is rather hard to sell your food stamps around here but i suppose you could let someone use your card which requires letting them have your pin number and you could also take them shopping at your expense. But on to the question... I do think that that person who uses their food benefits in one way or another to obtain an alcoholic beverage or tobacco product, yes their benefits should be ceased. As far as women who get pregnant to keep the benefits, well that is a life mistake on their part but it is in no way shape or form beneficial for us to then take away any benefits of which she is entitled to because then at that point instead of denying the mother we are then denying the child as well and we know the child had nothing to do with the fact their mom is on assistance. As far as taking responsibility, in Kansas I know that once you are on welfare and dont have a job of any sorts, provided you are not disabled, you are required to get a job or complete thier career course within 90 days of their notice or you benefits will cease. This I know to be true. They dont want you to be a total free loader. We must however remember that there are those in this country who do not abuse the system and we need to remember that they should not be punished for the mooches in this country.

i agree with Schmorgen......really have you been around someone who has not had a cigarette in awhile? It is not pleasant. Cigarettes are very addicting--why do you think they cant put them down??????? It is not like pop-ohhhh get a bulge quit drinking pop. I guess the answer is "you dont want the smokers to quit smoking unless you want more rage on the streets".

The tobacco industry generates billions of dollars every year. It also employs lots of people. Its a nice thought to outlaw them, but very unrealistic. Above all else, its a personal choice issue. If people want to smoke, that's their choice. Also, we can't live in a bubble. Dying is the price of living. People die in car crashes, should we outlaw cars?
