Because they are completely crazy! Honestly, they would rather protect the sex offenders and criminals than the abused children in foster care, etc. They say they have big hearts.... I don't believe a word of it!

ACLU Statement on Defending Free Speech of Unpopular Organizations (8/31/2000)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK--In the United States Supreme Court over the past few years, the American Civil Liberties Union has taken the side of a fundamentalist Christian church, a Santerian church, and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. In celebrated cases, the ACLU has stood up for everyone from Oliver North to the National Socialist Party. In spite of all that, the ACLU has never advocated Christianity, ritual animal sacrifice, trading arms for hostages or genocide. In representing NAMBLA today, our Massachusetts affiliate does not advocate sexual relationships between adults and children.

What the ACLU does advocate is robust freedom of speech for everyone. The lawsuit involved here, were it to succeed, would strike at the heart of freedom of speech. The case is based on a shocking murder. But the lawsuit says the crime is the responsibility not of those who committed the murder, but of someone who posted vile material on the Internet. The principle is as simple as it is central to true freedom of speech: those who do wrong are responsible for what they do; those who speak about it are not.

It is easy to defend freedom of speech when the message is something many people find at least reasonable. But the defense of freedom of speech is most critical when the message is one most people find repulsive. That was true when the Nazis marched in Skokie. It remains true today.

The whole thing gives me the creeps, to be honest with you. I feel like I need to wash my computer just discussing the issue.

That said, the ACLU is arguing that an organization should not be held responsible for crimes committed by someone who reads its pamphlets. Unpopular speech - as morally repugnant as it is - needs defending.

Lest you think it's only in the defense of disgusting pedophiles, let's take a look at this:

Ann Coulter wrote in an email interview that John Murtha "is the reason soldiers invented fragging." Thus she suggests that Murtha should be killed by his fellow soldiers. I know it isn't the same, but what if someone offs Murtha and cites Coulter's statement. Is she to be held responsible for inciting the murder of John Murtha.

What if some mentally unbalanced person comes on here and reads one of those questions that end in "should we just shoot them all" (whether it be about liberals or conservatives) and goes on a shooting spree. Should the writer of said question be held liable for the crimes committed by the reader?

I know the arguments the family is using to sue the organization, and in many ways I wish they would win and shut them down. Personally, I think the police should consider going after them as a crime syndicate (again if they're producing instructional pamphlets on how to seduce children, they're supporting a crime - if they are arguing laws should be overturned, then it's their right, hideous as it is).

But you have to be careful, and I think that's what the ACLU is saying. If one organization is found guilty, it may open the flood gates for people to go after anyone whose speech is unpopular.

possibly the ACLU getting desirous about multiple the lawsuits is scarring human beings out of doing some thing. may be their lobbyists and marketing campaign donations. not asserting congress is that sympathetic to them yet at one time congressmen appeared to be operating by using the pages. humorous the way you do not hear some thing about them anymore. variety a provides a clean which ability to that previous asserting, "Politics makes unusual **********". I had to do somewhat analyze. I had no theory it changed into international. i ought to not believe multiple the operations happening. that is a modern-day day Jekyll and Hyde corporation. merely because someone is legendary would not lead them to a goody 2 footwear. I took a seem at a sex criminal registry map and couldn't believe it. possibly NAMBLA individuals should be blanketed on the maps. >???<

Why does the ACLU defend the religious fanatics who are protesting at military funerals? Is it a right wing conservative thing????

The ACLU defends all things that are attacks on our personal freedoms and civil liberties. I'm not sure exactly why they seem to support liberal causes more than conservatives, since the conservatives I know tend to support individual freedoms as much as the liberals.

Dude that's the immoral close minded attitude the liberals are talking about. Don't you know that liberals support older men being able to take advantage of young boys? That's a civil right that has to be protected by our moral liberals. Hell all they really have to do is join the Catholic church, if they desire pedophilia. BTW - in liberal America you don't have the right to be offended if you are in the majority.

Really horrible try by a puppet.

The ACLU has defended the rights of groups as diverse as the KKK's right to march, RUSH's right to use more than one doctor to get his pills and YOUR RIGHT to spew hatred in public places.

BE A REAL MAN FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE. BE HONEST AND THINK FOR YOURSELF!

just looking out for their rights, which, with enough money and publicity, will include breaking the law. it started with gays. then the pedophiles said "if he can marry another guy, why am i not free to touch a little boy?", then another guy says "if he is free to touch a little boy, why can't i marry 14 women, even if 10 are underage?' and on, and on
