I heard a story once about a couple going on vacation and leaving their infant in a high chair so the babysitter could come feed the baby right away but they had to go because they would be late, so they left the baby alone because they thought the babysitter was minutes away, but when they returned they discovered that the baby sitter never came and their baby died from starvation after chewing off it's own hand. Is this urban legend or the truth? Can anyone find me proof? What about the one about the stoned baby sitter that put the turkey to bed and the baby in the oven when the parents came home and asked how the night went? Are these ficticious?

I found this:

[Collected by Dale, 1984]

A Norwegian couple, who had not had a proper holiday for years, decided to treat themselves to a long winter holiday in the sun. At last the great day dawned; everything was packed and loaded into the car — as soon as Nanny arrived they could get away. But today of all days, Nanny was late. At the last minute she phoned and told them that her car had broken down. The man said that if they came to collect her now they would miss their flight; was it too far to walk? Nanny said it wasn't, they could leave and she'd be there in a quarter of an hour. So the wife strapped their young son into his highchair, told him Nanny wouldn't be long, and set off for their island in the sun. During the long, hot weeks away they missed the news that the girl had been hit by a bus and killed on her way to their house. When at last they returned, sun-bronzed and rejuvenated, they found their starved son still strapped into his chair where they had left him.

I'm pretty sure they are fake. As someone else said a baby could not chew off it own hand. But the parents I assume would have called the babysitter at some point just to check in, if they were gone long enough for the baby to starve to death. Why would a babysitter, stoned or not, be cooking a turkey at someone else house at nite? Don't turkeys take like 6 hrs to cook?

I don't know about the tukey/baby story, but there's no way a baby would chew off its own hand OR starve to death over a short length of time. Perhaps the child would die of dehydration, but it would take weeks to die of starvation and a child would not be able to chew off its own hand because if it had teeth it would be old enough to find its way out of its high chair. Not to mention, who would leave their baby alone in a high chair? Although I have seen similar things.

I as a parent would hope these stories are not true... but people do stupid things all the time... look at the woman who drowned her 5 kids and the only that pushed her car in the lake with her 2 kids strapped in and wen ton TV crying for her kids safe return.

was able to grow strong set of teeth so quickly to be able to chew of , wait a min, did u say the hand and not the finger? i cant believe it now since how do u expect the baby to chew the entire hand off without falling asleep and without crying,(oh i see, the baby couldnt cry because s/he had his or her hand in the mouth)

All made up. Babies are not physically able to chew off their own hands- and the 2nd one is so far out even a stoner wouldn't buy it...
