my fiancee just became a real estate agent and yes you do own the land all the way to the center of the earth for whatever good that would do you. and you own the space above your house up to a certian point in the atmosphere however that can be changed by the governement depending on exactly where you live. near airports and what not.
i believe it is done that way to ensure that a neighbor cant extend his property above or below your actual land. example: build a porch that extends over your property line but never acutally touches the ground on your side or perhaps an underground tunnel under your property and to the bank next door.

Apparently yes, you own the wedge to the centre of the earth but not to the other side. I think you also own the atmosphere above the land ...possibly going to the edge of the universe. Not sure about that last bit though.

Although not terribly important unless you drill for oil/own a machine like Peter Cushing in "At The Earth's Core", I'd like to see anyone try to take that earth off the owner.

not likely most people own the title to their land but not the mineral rights and such the government owns the land thats why we play taxes on the land.
