From my many years of making tiedye at home, I cannot recommend that you use rit - it will not last. Instead, I'd suggest that you get a tiedye kit from Dharma trading, or if you are pressed for time, a dylon kit from Hobby Lobby, Joann, or Walmart. Follow the instructions on the Dylon pack, or the instructions on the Dharma website for how to prep the dye.

As far as how to make the shirt LOOK tie dyed, you will need to fold and tie it off with rubber bands - use this website for some general ideas:

After that, prepare the shirts for dying in the method for the dye you use.

I personally prefer the procion dyes at Dharma - they are vivid and bright even after 7 years on some items around my home.

Be sure to get some gloves to protect your hands while you do this - or you will be stained for awhile...

Go wild, have fun, be one of kind.
