i am going to tell you the way that i have my 2 p.c,s set up with a shared connection
firstly you must have a b\band router with at least 1 usb connection and 1 ethernet,or 2 x ethernet
you will also need a 20m lentgh of cat5 crossover cable and a crossover adapter to connect it to your router
you must firstly uninstall your router from your main p.c and install it again letting setup know you are running two p.cs and if you decide to use usb laet setup know you are doing this
connect the cat5 cable to the adapter and insert into the ethernet socket at the back of the router and slowly lay the cable out to your next p.c(its a good idea to secure the cable using cable clips avalible from b+q)
you need to run your router instalation disc again on p.c2 and let setup know you are running two p.c,s and that you will be using a ethernet to run this system(all of these prompts will appear in setup when installing router)
this way you dont loose any bandwidth while online and can be completed in 15 minutes(the worst part is laying the cable)
alternitivley you can use the network connection wizard in xp and setup a shared internet connection that way,but if one of your p.c,s gets infected the other is at more of a risk than if you decide to do it the way i have showed
if you are limited to ethernet\usb sockets on your router ,you can get some very cheap broadband routers from http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&NavigationKey=11177&NavigationKey=4294960269&CategorySelectedId=11177&PageMode=1,as you can see there are alot to choose from so get the one that has the best connectivity
good luck

Use the Windows XP connection wizard. It allows you to setup a shared connection. Just follow the directions onscreen. Get there from Network Connections.

Generally to use the shared internet connection you must have two network adapters in your system. One is connected to the ISP, while the other is connected to the device(s) wanting to "share" the internet.
