It seems that maybe we should just leave things alone. How often have you ever seen enabling work? It does not. Think of all the extra money we would have if our country didn't hand out all this foriegn aid that ends up rotting or getting into the hands of corrupt governments. Giving people free stuff just makes them rely on you. If there is no food, no water and no jobs.....they will move on. Let nature take it's course.

"Let nature take it's course"

That is hardly the motto of ANY advanced civilization. Nature will take it's course regardless. Human intervention is the only thing that has altered things in favor of mankind. Good or bad, this is how every civilization to date has become advanced.

To blame Bono for the social problems of the world, is crazy. That's like saying anyone who puts forth effort to make the world a better place is wrong.

What is WRONG in this world, are those that criticize and tear down the very things that others build and create. Nothing will happen unless someone acts. The world WILL pass you by gladly and indifferently.

I understand your case that money given to those who squander it is money wasted that could have been put elsewhere. The good thing is, money is a renewable resource. We need to ensure human decency and human kindess remains a renewable resource as well. For if we condemn those who offer their hand, we may find eventually, NO ONE is offering a hand and NO ONE cares if you are suffering even if they they have the ability to help.

I also agree, we should teach a man to fish instead of just giving them a fish. However, giving a fish can also build human bonds that will overcome far more obstacles than you can possibly imagine.

You're really not asking a question, which is what this site is for, but trying to promote a viewpoint. I think this kind of comment is more appropriate for a conservative call-in show (like Sean Hannity) or FOX News than it is for Yahoo! Answers.

I also think the use of the term enable in this context is not right. I think Bono is trying to get people to talk about an issue. Although I question the role of celebrity activitists, I do think it's good that people are at least talking. And "enablers" as your call them have done a lot of good work. Look at Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King etc. The work they did served to change policy.

Well, having met Bono a few times in person, I think that he is actually sincere and believes in his ability to better the world.

But on your general statement I have to agree. We would have a lot more to spend on our own people and countries if we would not give so much foreign aid. After all, the countries receiving our aid wanted to be independent. And ever since they are, they ask for our support and our money. It does not make sense.
Especially not because most of the money we give does not go to the poor and needy, but ends up in the Swiss bank accounts of African dictators.

My solution to the problems of Africa would be a complete stop of aid payments and food supplies, leaving the African countries to their own devices. For a very short time this would lead to chaos and probably a few thousand extra deaths. But then they would realise that they have to pull their own carts and actually get on with improving their situation.
Africa is an immensely rich continent and could produce more food and resources than its people would ever need. If we would force the Africans to look after themselves and establish real independence, it would be better for the whole world, and especially for Africa and the Africans.
There is one detail we would have to be willing to accept as well: We would have to pay fair prices for products and raw materials we import from Africa. If we did that, there would be more than enough money in Africa.

These people who we are giving aid to are in this position because of America and Europe. Think of all the people and work we took from them for hundreds of years. If they ahd all those people there that were working for their society maybe they wouldn't be underdeveloped. The idea that there isn't enough food in africa is ludicrous, you don't ever hear of rich people starving i africa. and yes there are some rich people in africa. The other thing is over 90% of people in africa rely on agriculture for their livelihood. the problem is the way we go about it not the fact that we are trying to help. You can call it whatever you would like but enabling isn't the right word for what bono is doing, what's wrong with trying to help a people that europe and america used and exploited for hundreds of years.

I will help others who will help themselves. Poverty will never end. Yeah, bono I feel is doing this for promotion in some form or another. Or maybe he's actually trying. But some people won't change as long as you hand out. Just right now, as I was in a 7 eleven, there was a man in there getting coffee. He reaked and I mean litterally smelled like s**t. His clothes dirty and torn. unshaved. I couldn't get close if I wanted to, he smelled that bad. I feel many of these people want you to "feel bad" for them. They just love the attention. It's a case of "pitty me"

I am all for just drop EVERYTHING out of foreign countries and let nature do what it will do. It will be sad to see some people go, but the world is so over populated we will eventually have to live as survior of the fittest. It's a natural course of nature and sad shame but it's all about balance in nature. We can't keep everyone. Like cleaning your home, you can't save everything, it will eventually get cluttered. You have discard things you don't use anymore.

Ending poverty is not just handing out money and that is not what Bono is saying. Your attitude is not a useful response. Yes, I agree handing money to corrupt people does not solve the problem. There are a lot of good answers to Bono's question and there are lot of people who are trying more creative solutions to helping people in poverty. Friends who have worked in Africa have told me stories of unbelievable suffering. Being poor in America is like being rich in some countries. In some cases, there is nowhere for these people to move on to. We need to feel a responsibility and we need to identify and support programs that are working to help with this problem.

I think you are wrong. America is just giving the wrong countries foreign aid. They are giving it to countries that can benefit them, not to actually help people. And I think Bono is doing a good thing by trying to help the starving children in Africa. Most Americans are ignorant to the reality of it, or they just don't want to open their eyes to it because they feel "put out." They don't want to have to share their time, money, or efforts to help anyone but themselves. And how can you "teach them to fish?" They have no economy, no way to earn money. Otherwise I'm sure they would love to work hard for some money to buy food to feed their emaciated children. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

You know, if you were born in Africa instead of wherever you are, if you had no shot from birth to survive, I bet you'd have a different tune, missy. Can you really say it's alright for thousands upon thousands to die for lack of food or water because it's nature? Did you eat a full meal today? Did you eat three? Have you ever been hungry- not like "I need to eat lunch" hungry, but "I haven't eaten in days" hungry? I hope you never have to be. I sure haven't. Maybe one of those starving kids will cure cancer. Maybe one of them will save your life. "All of the extra money we would have..." so you could jam more malomars into your gullet? There is enough for everyone, you know. There is no reason why people should die for want of food or water.

Try a little empathy. "there but for the grace of god go I."

Oh I just love people who don't have a clue what they're talking about shooting their mouths off.

You want to see it work? Go watch London's Live 8 concert and see Bob Geldoff introduce Birhan Woldu. If you can do that without a tear in your eye, then you are a cold hearted selfish person, with no right to enter into a discussion on the welfare of the world. To quote Bob "Don't let them tell you this stuff doesn't work. You work! You work very well." (of course, he wasn't talking to the likes of you, was he?

I am really sick of people feeling sorry for other countries that are poverty stricken. What about right here in the US. Does our government care about us? We are too busy worrying about other countries, why don't they worry about our own!! I feel sorry for poor people but you will never wipe out poverty. Let their own government take care of them. Money has been sent over there and it wasn't used to help the people. Its a lost cause.

They need to stop having so many children. If you know you can't feed them why have them. I know that sounds cruel, but its the truth.

I'm sure people have good intentions but leave it alone.
