I just got a Mobile external hard drive in March. It has already broken and needs to be replaced. Is this a common thing with these or could it just be the brand I bought?

While external HDDs are ruggedized for above average shocks and jolts, the rule of thumb is that anything that has moving parts and spins at high speeds like HDDs do is going to be subject to damage from too many jolts. I treat mine like eggs. The reading head 'floats' very close to the spinning disk, and sharp jolts can cause it to crash into the disk, physically damaging it. If your drive is making noises like pebbles in a can, you've got a head crash.

If you know that you're going to be banging an external drive around, I would suggest getting a solid state external Flash drive. I've seen Flash drives with capacities up to 6GB, which is great for backing up and transporting stuff.

I have bought one before. It's already spoit now. You need to use it with care. 2 things to keep in mind.

1. Try not to shake when you carry cos' most of the harddisk are not anti-shake.
2. Before you plug off your mobile drive from PC, unload it first. Meaning that..in WIndows > go to right bottom corner and click on green arrow icon and then "Unplug or eject software". By not doing that and just plugging your mobile drive is very very dangerous. That's one of the reasons why mobile drive spoilt.

My externals are about two years old now. They probably used a cheap HD inside the box. More likely the HD failed on its own, aside from anything else. I make my own external drives and buy the HDs myself.

Barring any shocks or extenuating circumstances, they should last much longer than a few months. I've had one for almost a year now (as a backup) with no problems. Was it name brand or White box?
