Yes. Why are you even a Chinese when you can't speak Mandarin? Of course people would sneer at someone who hasn't even mastered their own native language. I personally think very low of people who do not even try to learn their own mother tongue. I should know, because I started out without speaking Mandarin until the age of 12. I'm still not satisfied with my progress, because I'm still so much more fluent in English than in Mandarin, but I'm learning. And shame on you for even whining in a place like this.

As a chinese, it is expected that you know how to read, write & speak the language.. If you cant, it's never too late to learn.. especially now that China is rising, knowing the language is a huge advantage.
But if you are born in America (ABC = American Born Chinese), and u have never learn the language since young, juz tell them so...

Just tell them your CBA (Chinese born American) so you never learn Chinese big deal. Just ask them what country do u live in now? and when they say American/USA then say thinks last i remember we speak English here. lol.
