exactly, there are plenty of things people should be more worried about like the environment, war, poverty, crime, etc. but many people are just afraid of letting go of their judgements because then they would have to really think for themselves instead of blindly following the crowd.

There are over 300 million people in the US. About a quarter of them want to legislate morality. The government of a free country has no business making laws about personal morality. I'm a man who loves women and if they made a law tomorrow that said it was illegal for me to love women, I would suddenly be a criminal. I'm not going to change who I am to suit an unjust law. Homosexuals probably won't either- but I'm just guessing. There are two or three reasons why this gay marriage argument is happening right now. First, it is a political tool. A politician running for office can get a whole bunch of bible thumpers on his or her side by taking a stand against gay marriage. Secondly, some of the people who control pension funds (and Social Security) don't want to treat gay partners like any other spouse. Same for life insurance, medical insurance, etc. In the third place, ignorant, bigoted "Americans" think they have a right to tell other Americans how to live. They don't. I am an American. I support the Constitution. I'm prepared to fight for it. I won't think of it as fighting for someone's right to be gay or a pothead or to get an abortion. To me, it will be a fight for my right to make my personal choices- a founding principal of our country. The Bush administration only has to be held back for another year and a half. After that, we can go back to having elected leaders and some of these stupid "issues" can go away. Keep the faith.

As you can tell by most of the other answers people are very narrow minded. Thet are afraid of what they don't know or understand. You can't control who you fall in love with. And as for the person who said marriage was just to make more kids....people like that should be fixed. There are a lot of kids brought into this world by people who have no business being a parent. My ex wife is one of them. I thank God every day that I was able to get full custody of my child and away from a parent that abused her. Love is love....and if 2 people want to make a marriage work then it will take more than a piece of paper. Why shouldn't gays have the same rights about marriage ? What goes on behind closed doors is their business and no one elses. If they were to divorce then they would have the same problems as everyone else. I have seen gay couples that have been together for more than 10 years and straight couples that divorce after 2 or 3. Twenty years ago people raised hell about inter racial couples. Now it's no big deal. Let people be who they are and love who they want. The church should stay out of it because after all.....how often do we see Priest being charged with sexual abuse of boys ? There are a lot of more important things to worry about in this world with all our wars, famine, killings ect. for this to be such an issue. I believe everyone should have the same rights ! After all...wasen't our country founded on the thoughts that .....all men are created equal ?.......or is that only when it is convienent for our goverment ?

America has experienced many changes in the last century. Humans in general don't like changes. We seek a state of peace and tranquility. Gay marriages among other things represent change, and they are a sign that the world is moving too fast. It is a massive peter pan complex to just go back to the time when we were all kids and didn't have to worry about a thing. If gay marriages became legal it could be a blow to the effort to go back to a "simpler time".

I am not worried, and I do not get "freaked out" about this.
But I still think we should keep our societies in proper order. And that means that a marriage is the life-long union between a man and woman. Nothing more and nothing less. There can never be a "gay marriage". If homosexuals want to live together, that is fine with me (as long as they leave me in peace). But to destroy the age-old institution of marriage for the benefit of a weird minority is one of the most stupid things any country could do.

It reminds me of the time when people were freaked out about interracial marriages. I think any group that is struggling for equality will meet these crests and valleys of resistance. Gay Marriage is just one of those barriers that a lot of people have decided to freak out over because it effects something they can understand. The ability to love and the urge to marry is something that they (oh my god) have in common with those they are different from.
It takes some people a long time to accept change, especially when they view any gain of someone else as a personal threat.

I find it very sad when I find people like this, sometimes it just takes patience.
At any rate, it's really hard to be hateful for extended periods of time. It takes all the energy out of you after a while.
They'll come around eventually, or get really really tired.

I'm not sure but I was always taught, from the measure that you judge, you will be judged by!! That is a pretty big statement so I say it is really none of my business who can get married in the USA. I think it would be nice for gay couples to get survivors benefits if there partner dies unexpectedly. I don't I guess there is a lot to think about where debating this question. Just pray that the government will do the right thing!!!

Worried? No, that is not the issue. And like you say, gay marriage/unions are happening in other countries. If you're gay and wish to be 'married'-go to Canada! I'm not teaching my kids that it's 'ok' for a man and a man to be married. Sorry, not happening. And apparently, since 45 other states have voted it down so far, others agree with me.
I have no issues with being gay or straight - to each his own. But, marriage is sacred and that's just the way it is. Men and women can marry in the eyes of the state and God - the main basis for gays wanting marriage is benefits, benefits, benefits.
Not happening in my lifetime. Sorry! Unless of course, one partner gets an official sex change!

I'm not worried - I'm concerned about all the things that are happening in today's world - wars, genocide, natural disasters. I think that gay marriages shouldn't have happened.
It's not just the 2 people who are involved - it's some of the legalities that they demand as if they were a heterosexual couple.
And you know darn well that 2 men, or 2 women are not compatible sexually, just because of their physical makeup. Yet they insist on adopting children, who will have to face their peers in years to come, and children can be very cruel. I would hate for any child to say to his/her friends "c'mon over and meet my mothers/fathers". And living in that environment - who would be the discipliner? Who would live the role of mother/father? How could anyone believe that this is a natural, normal existence?

Pretty simple. I am not a religious man - but come on - over and over we hear about Adam and Eve - not Eve and Jane, or Adam and Joe. Think about it silly, our body's were created to intertwine. (male and female). We were created like that for a reason. An inny and an outty, that happens to fit without assistance. Get with it. Because some other nation is doing it it makes it right? You are an idiot to assume that because it is being done elsewhere it is o.k. I suppose; what Hitler was doing was o.k. as well, after all another country was doing it right. Get with it, and get real. Gay marriages and unions are not meant to be. WAKE UP!

Some people is this country are not opened minded enough or too selfish or too stupid to consider what it must be like not being able to marry someone just because the people in your country don't like it. Anti-gay activists say it'll damage children's lives if they have gay parents. And they're afraid more kids are going to grow up gay and think it's okay to be gay. But there's nothing wrong with being gay.
