i am told, while doing a safety inspection to register my mazda 626 (2001) in maryland, that, there is a rear/front leak, and it might be a major expense running up to few thousands. What is it, and why did not we feel anything while driving?

They're talking about the main seals which are in the front and back of the engine around the crankshaft. They are right in that it can be an expensive repair but the question is if they REALLY need to be fixed. There is really no harm in continuing to run without replacing them as long as the leak doesn't get too bad. If the car is a manual transmission and the rear leak gets bad it can cause the clutch to slip but that's about as bad as it can get. Otherwise about all you'll notice is an oil leak in the affected areas.
Honestly, probably 10%-15% of vehicles on the road have a main seal leak of some degree. In my semi-expert opinion, it's not worth fixing unless the car is of great value to you - there's no affect on performance and no engine harm will result. Just keep an eye on the oil level periodically and add as needed.

Ask for more details, what specifically is leaking, what fluid is leaking. The mechanic who told you about the problem should be able to show or tell you this information.

Go back and ask them what they actually said. There's no such thing as a "rear/front" leak.
