First, go to this site. These ae step by step guides on how to make AMVs, there are also links to quality AMVs. This has a slightly higher standard and videoquality than YT.
There is also a forum there to help you out with any specific technical questions. There are tons of friendly people that do this stuff for a living willing to help out.
Also, while on the site, check out a guy call Zarxax, His AMV HELL series is the best!
Also, if you need any more info. I would be willing to help.
Have fun and make something remarkable.

I've never made any amvs myself, but I've watched more than my share of them. Quite a few people use Windows Movie Maker, although the quality of the video is usually not very good. Other people use Adobe Premiere, but that program costs a little more than a small fortune. Animemusicvideos.org has some resources you might find useful, and you might find some useful links at anime.about.com And you can also search Google or Yahoo.

If you want to see the real thing, look for the Bubblegum Crisis Hurricanes Live 2032-2033 DVD. It has 13 videos, 10 of which are true AMVs. It's the only true collection of such that I have ever found.
My version has an ISBN: 1-57948-284-8
Check with ADV Films as they did a remaster of the OVA.

I think you can actually make them using movie maker in windows. You might also have to get clips from series and you can do that by getting screen shots or putting apart the esposides. you can also pull apart other AMV's to use them.
