Partitioning of a hard drive involves dividing up the hard drive in to multple volumes, like you said. There are some benefits to partitioning a drive. You can encrypt an entire volume to act as a safe for all your personal files, while leaving the rest of the partition open. You can setup one volume to hold the page file, which some experts believe will improve overall performance of a PC. But, before you doing any of these, you will need a hard drive partition utility. There are both free and commercial sofware available. I recommend Partition Logic (http://partitionlogic.org.uk/) in the freeware category and Symantec PartitionMagic for the commercial category. PC Magazine has a great review article for several commercial partition software, the link is http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1812053,00.asp

1st partition does not make your computer faster, in fact it will slow down, when the computer looks for the data you want it will now have to go thru the partitions instead of 1 drive. With only a 80 gig I wouldn't partition. If you looking for a space for your own and space for another, add a 2nd drive. There is lot of software that will partition your drive.

you can use a variety of partition programs, if your disk has data o nit, then you need partition majic to partition so you don't lose your data, if you don't then use fdisk, and make 4 eqaul partitions.
Partitions don't speed up anything or make anything more secure, sometimes it helps to organize, and you give up a lot of drive space using it, unless you have a specific need for it, I would just leave your drive alone

u'll need proper software, there are lot's of
but i do not recommend u to use partition magic as one above. there is Acronis Disk DIrector partitioning software.
it's cheaper and more functional.
it allows u to merge/split/resize ur partitions.
but anyway it's up to u to choose
