Just desserts means you receive reasonable consequences for your actions. Is our justice system set up to give reasonable consequences? Is that the purpose? To punish? To remove people from society to protect it? Te rehabilitate folks so they won't do crime anymore? What is the purpose of incarceration? Who decides what is a reasonable punishment? How are different races and classes treated by the system and why?
What you have to consider is whose motivation is it to punish those who break the law? What about the deterrent effect of incarceration? Does it keep others from breaking the law? What is fairness? Does it exist? Just desserts implies that there is fairness involved. Can ours or any justice system actually be fair in any way?
Answer these questions it will be a good start.
