Scary is being a parent and sending your child to school not knowing if gunshots will be fired or a school bus driver is on methamphetamines and will drive into a median.

Scary is walking down the street and not knowing if that man coming towards you at night is going to mug you or say hello as you pass each other by.

Scary is not knowing if you are going to be able to rebuild your home after a tornado or hurricane has totally destroyed it.

Scary is seeing your son or daughter leave to join the service and not knowing if you will celebrate another holiday or birthday with them again.

Scary is that feeling you get when you go to the doctor and he sends you to an oncologist for further testing.

Scary is not knowing if your social security check will be in the mail next month because there isn't enough money in the system.

Scary is a feeling you get when something there is a feeling of impending doom lurking it's eerie head around the corner.

Human beings have physical, spiritual, and psychological NEEDS - and anything that threatens those needs is scary.

Examples:

1. The most obvious is the need for self preservation so anything that can kill us scares us. (psychos, snakes, sharks, etc)

2. Next we have a basic need for food and shelter; aka security. Thus we are afraid of losing our job, investing poorly, taking a financial risk, etc. (Which is why we eagerly say "yes sir" to a dumb-*** boss who needs a good ***-kicking)

3. Less obvious, we have a STRONG need for pride and dignity, so we are afraid of humiliation and embarassment. This particular fear runs our life on a day to day basis. We don't speak up for fear of being wrong. We go along with the group (peer pressure) instead of standing up for what we really believe in.

(Have you noticed that on the internet people are much more willing to say what they really believe? Because postings are anonymous, the fear of public humiliation is drastically reduced)

4. We have a need for companionship so the thought of being alone scares us. This causes us to continue to stay with people who treat us bad and makes us overly protect our kids. (God forbid they actually be the 1 in 1,000,000 that actually pokes their eye out with a slurpee straw!

5. In addition to physical safety we all have a need for spiritual safety also. Organized religion fills this need by reassuring us each week that if we follow the rules and give money, everything will be OK when we die. We fear ghosts, demons, hell, the Devil and anything we believe can mess up our spiritual security.

For almost anything that scares you, you can probably track it back to some basic need that you have that is being threatened. Many people believe that the very purpose of our existence is to conquer fear. Some of the most respected people to have lived seemed to have accomplished this. Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, etc)

But I fear I have rambled on too long...

My imagination is by far the scariest thing in the universe. Nothing like walking up an open staircase at night "knowing" there is a tentacle monster down below just waiting to grab your leg and pull you through the railing and beat you up and eat you alive.

yes, fear is both real and " not knowing"
fear or "being scared" is a basic human emotion. it has been linked to the part of the brain responsible for emotions, the amygdala. fear is usually a perceived real or imagined threat probably caused by learned behavior. depending on the neurons, circuitry, etc of your brain fears can take different forms and intensities. if fears become out of control such as in phobias that interfer with one's functioning in daily life than professional help is often neccesary.

remember..........just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they are still aren't out to get you!
