Do a search for Stiffy Green, that is a local legend here where I live about a dog and his owner. I hope you find this helpful.

The only ghost I ever saw was the ghost of a dog. It happened this way:
I was coming home late at night. There was a truck in the courtyard. I never saw that truck, and I felt that something was wrong. Then I saw two or three men, one of them with a riffle. Further, in an open staircase, a woman was shouting things I couldn't understand. The men climbed into the truck as I started going up the stairs leading to my place. When I got up to the first level, I looked down. The truck had left. I saw the body of a little stray dog I knew, a very, very friendly animal, that had lived there for a while, and playing with kids. I had tried to take it home, but it was happy living outside. We used to call it: "Malinki".
I rushed down. It took me about 5 seconds to get there, to the spot where the body had been laying. When I got there, the dog, or the body of the dog was gone --I touched the ground, and looked at my fingers, and I saw blood.
The next morning, a neighbour told me the dog had been killed.

Based on all I've heard and read... ghosts are the result of a soul's unfinished business or fear of moving on. Anyone who's owned a pet, especially a social one like a cat or dog, would never doubt it's capacity to love unconditionally. That's the sort of emotion that can keep the ghost of an animal earthbound. Now the question as to whether or not animals have souls... that's one for the thoelogians to debate.

Animal ghosts do exist, I have seen them myself, and have known others who have as well. Stories of animal spirits go back as far as the Victorian era that I have read, and I've no doubt further in time from Native Americans and shamans worldwide. They are rarely caught on film, but photos do exist. Human hauntings and "demonic" hauntings are just more frightening and I think get alot more attention because of it. It makes since though, no one ever tells of having a troublesome and terrifying dog haunting! LoL

Do animals have souls? Okay, I know I am suppossed to be answering, but that is how I'd answer the question. If it has a soul then I think it could be a ghost. However, I've never had an encounter with a ghost, unless it was a little kid with a sheet over his head on Halloween. :~)

Animals have souls just as humans do and there are many records of animal ghosts being seen, especially the ghosts of deceased pets.
Animals don't feel sorry for themselves and don't harbor resentment as human animals do, so their ghosts are almost always benign or pleasant.

Actually, in classic folk stories there is a story told in almost all cultures of the world. It is sometimes referred to as The Story of the Grateful Dead (and it's where that band got its name)... The story is of a young prince who is banished by his evil brother after the death of the king (in some tellings) and goes out into the world to find a way to reclaim his throne.
On the road he meets a number of animals, and they help with his quest. But the truth of these animals is that they are actually the spirits of dead people who have been helped by the prince's now dead father... they help him overcome his evil twin and restore him to the throne.
This may not be exactly the answer you were looking for, but it illustrates one folkloric connection of spirits to animals.
There are probably many others...

There are legends of things like that happening. Or at the very least people coming back with their old pets.
Animals have always been believed to have spirits, maybe not by christians, but before they came along. Hence why so many monsters in old legends are animal.

There are animal spirits; I find myself jumping over dogs, mostly, all the time and then it turns out there isn't one. I see them clearly and feel I'm going to step on them because for some reason, they are usually small and underfoot. After I jump over them, they disappear. I have also felt nudges, but not that often.
