I think Americans are mainly afraid of China becoming more powerful than America.

Economically:
China has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and the people there can work for very little. The American economy is not growing fast at all and workers there expect a lot of money and time off. Companies prefer employing the Chinese because they get more for their money. Chinese products are cheaper so people are often more willing to buy chinese goods than American goods. This means a lot of money is leaving America and going to China so the Americans are struggling to compete with China.

On The World Stage:
America is getting a lot of negative attention on the world stage due to the war in Iraq and because they interfere ina lot of affairs which don't concern them. This gives many people around the world a bad impression of the US. China on the other hand choose to remain relatively silent so they don't provoke as many people.

Militarily
China has the largest army in the world. They also have enough nukes to blow the world up several times. The USA have a similar capability. That's why the two countries know it would be silly to go to war with each other.

In summary... I think it's Chinas growing economic power that Americans should be most worried about.

If the US isn't scared by the rise of the Chinese economy, it should be. On a purchasing power parity basis, which is the most accurate and respected measure of economic power, the Chinese are third behind the combined EU at €11 trillion, the US at €10.5 trillion and China is at about €7.5 trillion.

Growing at a rate of 9% per annum, the large gap between the two will narrow rapidly over the next 10 years, leading to the widespread dilution of US power in Asia. China already exerts a huge amount of influence on its neighbours, Kyrgyztan, Tajikistan, South and North Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Phillipines and Mongolia. These nations are either resource rich or powerful little engines of Asian economic growth on the back of exports and are fearsome nations China may choose to deploy in a possible proxy war against the US.

Further afield, China has recently gone on a huge trade mission to several mineral-rich African republics, striking up cosy trade deals with them as the continents second largest trading partner after the EU. Sudan is the most blatant example of this, Sudan's government has been given protection from the UN by the Chinese through their veto on the Security Council. This China does in return for Sudan exporting oil cheaply to energy-hungry China.

Its also present in the Iran situation, China has shielded Iran from the worst rancours the US may want to inflict on it. This, like in Sudan, it does for assured supplies of petrol to fuel their economic transformation.

The tiger may crouch, but this huge dragon is definiely no longer hidden.

Oh yes.
USA may be the world's superpower right now but anyone can see there is a shift in power. China just can't be ignored!
Although I feel the main threat will be from the Russians as they are slowly rebuilding their nukes and will soon be as powerful as the old Soviet Union.
The expected break up of the UK in the next 10 years and energy resources will be major factors in the resurgence of communism, headed by the Russians and the Chinese.

Are you asking if the USA is frightened of China?
If so, then the answer is no.

Should we be?
Hell, yes.
Why?
China is the emerging economic giant.
Already, much of the reason oil prices have sky-rocketed is because the demand from China for oil to fuel its growing economy.

And what is the basis of that economy?
Making things for Americans.

America imports MORE from China than in exports to China.
We are a debtor nation to China.
The trade imbalance FAVORS China.
They are reaping the $$$ from our pockets...NOT American workers.

I could not find recent statistics, but the link below (dated 2003) says that China is the THIRD largest importer into the USA.

So...get ready to become the United States of China!

The USA a baby in years compared to MANY counries in the world, they are a young know it all country that listens to noone and does as it pleases. I brain washes the people who live there in believing they are the best. They do not want anyone else to be better and portrays countries who try as evil people that are going to harm Americans. NOT TRUE. You are afraid of yourselves and are not willing to share ANYthing. China has a right as any other country to do the best they can, for themselves and for the growth of the world. Let others grow as the US has and we could all help each other. STOP being so spoiled.

china is a new superpower as now the US is losing its superpower hold on the world. There was a article that say in 10 years US will no longer be a super power and that china will be the top superpower in the world. I prefer we stay the top of the food chain so but not into everyone's business as much . aka Iraq.

No, we're not scared of anyone. There are many people in this country from pacifists to war mongers from liberal to conservative... but when it comes down to us or them, we all stand united (just like we were after 9/11).

And rand.... although china has more soldiers, they definitely do not have more nuclear capability. The only country that had that honor was the Soviet Union, however their nuclear capability has quickly deteriorated.

The USA loves democracy. Democracy is all about counting votes. They have more voters than America. Just lets hope there is never a world democracy.
