Actually the trailer just sits in a remote place out of the way of action. It is Prime's nerve center or center control, CPU. If none were to tamper with it he would go nuts. In the 80's there was such an episode that showed actually what happens when Pime's trailer is not functioning properly.
Not only that, inside the trailer there are to additional Mobile units that he can use, however, he never does.

One of life's great mysteries. It's odd that it never bugged me when I was a kid.
By the way, have you heard about the live-action movie they're trying to get made? What I wanna know is will it be based on the cool cartoons I remember as a kid or the crappy anime-pokemon-formers that I've seen recently?

I've always wondered that myself- even as a little kid who watched the original cartoons. The coolest explanation I can think of is a "pocket dimension"... but it's sometimes there when he needs it- so the true best (and most annoyingly obvious) answer is "off-screen."
