There is no more moving experience in the world than, Aarti that takes place on the Ganga every evening at sunset in Haridwar. At sunset the gongs begin, then the conk shells chime in and Gangamanta is playing over the load speaker. All the while people are putting in the river little boats with candles, and you look with amazement as they float down the river.
But wait the best is yet to come!
Priests take huge burning oil lamps and begin swinging them around and around, flames leap in the air. It is dark, and the priests tilt their lamps over the river and burning oil pours into the Ganges, the gonging gets more intense, the horns blast more feverishly. All during, the Hindus stand in complete reverence with their hands held together in worship.
Aarti at Haridaw is a sight to behold...No better Aarti in all of India.
PS for whatever it’s worth that’s 150 words exactly!

I have seen the aarti at Haridwar. And I must say it is something you will never forget in your lifetime. I have been fortunate to go beyond Haridwar, travelling along the Ganges. The confluence of Bhagirathi and the Alknanda at Devparayag to assume the name of Ganga therefater is mesemerizing. The carpet of white water, thundering down the hills will srtir up your emotions. Touching the icy cold water of Alaknanda at Badrinath is something I will never forget. I had travelled a lot in Uttaranchal. Many such trips chronicled in my blog at http://seven-sisters.blogspot.com.
