I can certainly see how people can respect and admire the accomplishments or attributes of someone they do not know (Martin Luther King, Jr., Buddha, Jesus, Mahatma Mohandas Gandhi, Bono). Such people can serve as inspiration and example, and remind us that good and great things can be accomplished by real people. We used to have examples from people in our families or our neighborhoods, and now more of our examples of how to live come from media of some sort. (I personally think I've learned a lot from Andy Griffith about how to be a father.)
When "stars" (models, actors, singers, etc.) are idolized, it is important to look at what aspect is being admired, which will tell you a lot about the person doing the admiring. If Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie are revered for being "hot" (either in body or in popularity), I think it is because that is the level of appreciation that the person doing the revering can handle. Most of my disappointment with the obsession with celebrity is the realization that so many people can't or won't think beyond the most superficial. Why aren't more people idolzing Kofi Annan for what he has done and tried to do with the UN? Do people revere the scientists who unraveled the human genome? Only a few are, because for most people it is simply too much work to understand the accomplishments or character of these people, Following Brad and Angelina is far easier and gives a fast payback...one can appreciate the physical charms of either in a moment, with no thought.
And what we know about those two relates to most of our lives more readily. Are they in love, too fat, or mistreat their kids? We understand that. But how many of us can relate to the trial and tribultations of researchers curing diseases? In a way, idolatry of celebrity is a lot like candy for the mind and soul.
I don't "blame" anyone for idolizing the "celebrity" attributes of others (I would be Bono for a day if I could, I think Prince is STILL a musical genius, and I would love to watch a movie where Kelly Preston runs nude along a beach), but I feel sad for anyone who can't get past the superficial to something deeper.

There's no real point in it, no. Some people just find some sort of attraction to them, whether it be physical, emotional or spiritual. People always idolize others, it's just in our nature to have someone to look up to. Some celebrities don't deserve the what you mentioned, but there are some that use their being famous as an advantage to make the world a better place, which is very respectable to a certain extent.

the international was a extra helpful place without this entire superstar lifestyle occurring. you probably did no longer have the likes of Sky and living television and fact shows. It grew to become into all good previous formed entainment, and human beings had expertise (apart from Samantha Fox). Rehab wasn't quite heard of till somebody had a real problem and there have been no modern superstar gossip magazines. And it wasn't 'admired' to be a unmarried mum as those celebs look to recommend the incontrovertible fact which you're able to have a little one and nonetheless proceed to party. those wealthy young ones quite are a foul occasion to in the present day's impressionable teenage females.

Not really in my opinion. You see people obsess over everything. And the most trivial stuff makes news regarding celebities. "And tonight on the 10 o clock news, what Paris Hilton had for lunch today!"
They're just people! I guess that's why I never really get star stuck when I meet someone.
And what's up with autographs? I'd rather have a conversation and a quick 2 second meaningless signature.

Yes if they are really talented. Besides it keeps me out of trouble. I need to find a role model somewhere so why not on TV. I don't think there is anything wrong with checking out hot guys on TV it is safer than checking them out at a bar.
