Infra-red uses - wait for it - a beam of infra-red light as a means to communicate between devices. As light travels in a straight line, the two devices need to be close together and within line of sight of each other.
Bluetooth uses radio waves at a specific frequency. As radio waves radiate out in all directions and can be bounced off objects, the two devices do not need to be within line of sight and can be farther apart. This makes bluetooth much more versatile.

The infrared is a very old and mostly redundant method of transferring data. It is extremely slow, you have to have an unobstructed line of sight with the other device for it to work.
Bluetooth is obviously more modern and is very much faster than IR. You do not have to be in line of sight which obviously opens up greater possibilities. Bluetooth also has ranges of upto 150metres depending on environment.

Bluetooth has a a longer range and does not require line of sight. Infared requires line of sight and has a shorter range.

bluetooth is wide range and infrared is line of sight. IR only works upto a meter away where as bluetooth has a 10 meter range

infrared- you can download stuff off another mobile that has infrared when they are held together.
bluetooth-you can send things by bluetooth to people who are in the same room as you, but they have to have their bluetooth on.
