It's probably a good thing you asked ! It is illegal in most states to introduce a foreign fish into the environment. This does include most aquarium fish purchased at your local pet store. The best way to get rid of them is to place an ad in your local paper or give them to a friend. If all else fails ask the pet store if they are interested in taking them back. Even if you just gave them to the fish store, the little fish would then stand a chance of getting to continue their lives. Don't Flush Them, thats illegal ! Don't quit feeding them! That would be animal abuse. Has she considered eating them? LOL Just joking! I would place an ad or ask a pet store.

Most pet stores will take them back. If not try placing an add. Someone will surely want a free fish and tank set up. If you can't find anyone to take it, try your local police station, elderly home, or some public place like that. If by any means you can't find a new home for it. Place it in a baggie with some aquarium water and put it in the freezer. I do this to my sick fish that have no chance of surviving. But do it humanly, not mean. Freezing it in water is the best painless way. Good luck and I'm sorry your sister doesn't want it anymore. I hope she thinks long and hard next time she wants a pet.

The only reason why you should euthanize a fish is if its sick and has no hope of getting better. Thats is the ONLY reason. Killing a fish because you're tired of taking care of it or because you can't keep it is wrong.
Why don't you take the fish?
Look into a local pet store. They may buy it back from her if the fish is in good health. Otherwise, if they have any open quarantine tanks, they may just take the fish without paying her (it's their right to decide - your sister will be inconveniencing them).
I've noticed a lot of Oriental restaurants have fish tanks now - ask one of them if they'd take another fish to add to their collections.
And the school and nursing home ideas are great, too.

Give it to a pet store. I don't know why you'd want to kill a pet, but I think the most humane way would be the fastest way, which would be to have someone hit it on the head. The least messy way would be to put it in the freezer overnight. A goldfish will go to sleep after it gets to a low enough temperature. Even giving it to someone with a pet that eats fish would be better than wasting it. I can't imagine having to resort to that, though. Find somewhere to take it or give it to someone with a pond!

If she cannot find another home for it, the most humane way to kill a living fish is to put it in a bowl of ice water and freeze it. It is even more humane (it will knock the fish out & euthanize it quicker) if you put a few shots of vodka per 1/2 gallon of water. It goes into shock, and passes out, so far as a fish nervous system has 'consciousness', and then freezes to death.
It would be better to see if someone else wants it. Sometimes aquarium shops will take back a bigger than usual fish.

the fish love when you flush them, its like a water ride for them like Great Adventure. Its great they can get a T-shirt, or picture of themselves at the end of the ride....but no really just flush it. Two days from now you wont even remember it. But no really schools take them all the time and if that fails a pond or river works.

You could try asking pet stores, but if she can't find them an adoptive home, she could either try dumping them into a pond at the park or just give in and flush them.

I saw this on an animal show...You are suppose to chop it's head off. Putting it in the freezing it is painful and dumping it in the toilet..come on that goes to where your drinking water comes from too. I don't know about you but I don't want to drink water that a dead fish was in.

See if a pet store will take it or go to a goldfish website and ask if anyone will take it. Where does she live, if its close to me I will take it. I don't understand why murder is an option, if she didn't want the fish then she shouldn't of bought it.
