my stepfather. They asked me to keep it confidential. If I tell my mother can I be charged with a crime?

No. The police have asked you to do them a favor. That's all. The police do not have authority to tell you to be quiet. Only a court issuing a gag order (in limited circumstances) can do that. This is part of your right to free speech.

However, if the police asked you to keep quiet, they did so for a reason. Your telling someone the information may hamper the investigation. There could be practical repurcussions to your blabbing. If you sour this deal for them, how fast do you think they're going to respond next time you NEED them? Quid pro quo, my friend. Quid pro quo.

Possibly. It's called "Obstruction of Justice". Wouldn't want to be in your shoes.

Consult with an attorney before you tell anyone anything. You need to know exactly what the law says on this first. It might be a priviledged communication and it might not be. You need to know from an attorney first.
