What does the word rest means when playing music in a band or orchestra.?

Just like it says. Rest is a break from playing. Since each beat has to be filled with a note they needed something to show that you are not supposed to play during that beat or series of beats. Bass drum players see a lot of those since most of the time they are not playing on every beat.
