The question has to be put in context.
In a civilized society, any kind of violence is wrong because any violence will only create more violence so the right response for violence should be non-violence to end it all and then everybody lives in peace.
However, if we see purely from the survival point of view, sometimes stealing and then also violence itself can be justified.
Imagine you stole the secret codes (and corrupted them) from a corrupt governement hell bent on nuclear bombing the earth?

That depends on a few other things.
First, is there any other way to get it back? If so, yes, it's wrong.
Second, is it essential to sustaining your life (by this I mean the continue living type of life, not your lifestyle)? If so, and the answer to the first question is no, then it is not wrong.

Generally, it would be considered illegal to not try and retrieve it through a court of law (the legal avenue), no matter how futile the attempt.

That is taking the law into your own hands and makes you just as guilty as those who did you wrong.

Violence is never the answer. Violence only creates more violence -- stop the circle. Take the higher road.
