Just wondering if having one has affected you badly in your work environment!

I am a middle school teacher and I have two tattoos. My students know about one, because they see it if I wear a sleeveless shirt. The fact that I have tattoos does not make me a bad teacher or less of a role model. I believe in self expression. Everyone is different, that is what makes the world so interesting. :-)

Tattoos have nto affected my work so much. I have noticed that people who see them tend to comment and ask .. everyone has a tattoo story to share. So it distracts from my work a bit.. but I'm in a pretty relaxed atmosphere. My mother works in a high school and she was very worried about the proffessionalism of her tattoos. But so far no problem.
I imagne although tattoos are so main stream right now there are still those who do not find it appropriate to have them "hanging out" So in the work place I find it is better to have them covered up.

I don't, but my sister-in-law does, and it was coincidentally a topic of conversation for us recently. She works for the local council.

She has a tribal band on her upper arm, and another tatoo on her calf. She just always wears elbow length or longer sleeve tops and trousers or long skirts to work. (She's generally a very sporty type, so dressing for work is work, anyway). Since nobody ever actually sees her tatoos, it's not an issue. She accepts that there is a certain expectation of how she should look for her job, and just like the business clothes she wears, that also includes having tidy hair, wearing a touch of makeup (which she never does at home) and covering her tatoos.

Yes Ma'Am.. I have a 4x4 Koi fish tattoo that I love.. I showed my boss, but only for fun! I got it where no one can see it anyhow, unless I choose to show them (lower navel). But that's my whole point of the tattoo, I got it after a period in my life that I wanted a memory of... Not a screaming factoid of my life for others to view, but for my own serenity. Works well lol, as I work in Real Estate, and I certainly don't come to the office in my Bikini..
I have looked into getting sleeves (I am a female, der..) but am afraid that it will have far too much impact on my professional persona. They're really rad, but not for me I fear.
My Hubby-to-be has like 5, but he runs a Steel Erection Company (Construction) so the professional appearance is not the same standard as for me! He's getting sleeves and I am uber jealous! Lol, although I would like for him to wait till after the wedding (for the photos!)...

I know several professionals who have tattoos. Those that do better in the working world are those who have tats that are not visible to their coworkders or their clients. If you are going to get one, get it on a part of your body that will be covered with office attire. If getting one on the arm, above the line where short sleves fall on either a dress shirt or a polo shirt.
