It is the area designated for the taking of goal kicks. Also in today's game it is an area where it is not permitted to make any contact with the goalkeeper.

When you get a goal kick you must take the kick from inside the 6 yard box. Its probably useful for 'keepers as a reference too. Has nothing to do with penalties.

It is for taking goal kicks but also if an indirect free kick is given to the attacking team inside the 6yd box, the resulting free kick can taken from anywhere outside the 6 yd box. and the only place the defending team can create a wall is on the goal line.
